One of the very obvious difference is the dating game. But I was not aware that accepting to go out to dinner with a man alone gave the signal that I was possibly romantically interested in him.
Nor did I know about this first date, second date and third date business.
I did the same thing as a girl, talking about my boyfriend (actually existing or not) early on in the conversation. And some people are just not faithful, but contrary to popular opinion, it’s not worse in France than anywhere else (and several studies demonstrate it). It’s in our genes and it’s socially accepted in France.
He’s not a dating expert, nor an advice columnist, psychologist or relationship therapist.
But not all marriages happen to be successful and people just understand that they cannot live together; they are too different and drive each other crazy.
Or, sometimes it is that you just need to add up some heat to your relationships and make your husband/wife a little bit jealous.
After looking it over for about fifteen minutes, Beth returned the report to my desk and told me I was a male chauvinist. I was fond of Beth and trying to help her, so after I recovered, I asked her what made her think that.
She said, “You reinforce the myth that the reason men don’t commit is that the women in their lives do something wrong. In most cases, it’s the man in a relationship who decides he isn’t ready or doesn’t want to get married, and he makes this decision without any help from the woman." After telling Beth that more than three hundred women had worked with me on the marriage research and not one had made the comment she just offered, I apologized. My interviews with single men had shown there were men who would not commit.
It is so funny to see how some social behaviors are exactly the same between France and the US, and others are completely different. Well, this was a big shock to me when I arrived in the US. I understood of course a man and a woman could be interested in each other in a romantic way, let me reassure you.
What’s wrong with the guy in jeans and a T-shirt, driving a Camry, checking his Timex to see exactly when his check is going to hit the bank? Never allow yourself to be impressed by a man’s depreciating assets (cars, clothes, expensive rental apartment). If you’re going to be impressed with material things, at least be smart enough to start with his net worth.
