They divorced 21 years ago, but separation has not withered Andrew Lloyd Webber’s affections for his ex-wife Sarah Brightman as he called her ‘my angel of music’ during an extraordinary reconciliation.
Hugging each other tightly on stage, the multi-millionaire composer was clearly tearful as Miss Brightman, 51, performed The Phantom of the Opera at the end of the gala evening at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday night.
According to my tape recorder, just six minutes and 52 seconds have elapsed since I met the tenor Andrea Bocelli and he has just announced that he “haf a beeg reeespect for sex.” A big respect for sex?
“Yes, a beeg reeespect for sex.” There are several of us in this New York hotel room, but I appear to be the only one with a blush rising from their neck, and I soon realise that this is because I am the only one who is not from Italy. He is Italian, the most famous Italian after Silvio Berlusconi now I come to think about it – a section of the Adriatic coast is named after him – and, much like the Italian prime minister, Bocelli’s voice seems to make women’s clothes fall off, as witnessed the night before when he performed to a packed Central Park.
Brightman's 1996 duet with the Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, "Time to Say Goodbye", topped charts all over Europe and became the highest and fastest selling single of all time in Germany, where it stayed at the top of the charts for 14 consecutive weeks and sold over 3 million copies.
Brightman is the first artist to have been invited twice to perform the theme song at the Olympic Games, first at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games where she sang "Amigos Para Siempre" with the Spanish tenor José Carreras with an estimated global audience of a billion people, and 16 years later in 2008 in Beijing, this time with Chinese singer Liu Huan, performing the song "You and Me" to an estimated 4 billion people worldwide.
Miss Brightman was also reunited with her former Phantom co-star Michael Crawford, who debuted the title role, and Lord Lloyd-Webber confessed: ‘I never thought I would see them together on stage again.’ Ensemble cast: From left, Anthony Warlow, Gillian Lynne, John Owen-Jones, Sarah Brightman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Michael Crawford, Sierra Boggess, Ramin Karimloo, Cameron Mackintosh, Colm Wilkinson and Peter Joback ‘Sarah is a gypsy.
